Young Farmers and Chefs of the Lowcountry

Gullah Cooking School

Come cook, learn, and have fun! At the Gullah Cooking School on St. Helena Island, kids get hands-on in the kitchen with real chefs who teach how to make tasty Gullah dishes like crispy yams and shrimp stew. While we cook, we also share cool stories and fun facts about Gullah culture. It’s more than just cooking—it’s a delicious adventure!

GULLAH COOKING SCHOOL LAUNCH

We officially launched the Summer 2025 Gullah Cooking School in June with 15 dedicated young chefs. We taught the roots of Gullah foodways—from the stories to the spices. Then, we guided them into the kitchen to prepare traditional dishes like:

  • Red Rice

  • Macaroni & Cheese

  • Baked Chicken

  • Fried fish

This course is being led by Bubba Green and Chief Bill Green, two of our region’s most respected culture bearers and culinary storytellers.

Join us Thursday, July 31 for the Gullah Cooking School Graduation and Fundraiser

We invite families, friends, and community members to celebrate their accomplishments and enjoy a taste of the work they’ve done. This event will feature a community meal prepared by the students and a showcase of their learning.
